Craftsmanship & Care
Every Maison de Kalidad piece begins with the leather, and is finished entirely by hand. Here's how we make it — and how to keep it looking its best for years to come.
The leather
Italian leathers, responsibly sourced
We source premium leathers from some of the world’s most respected tanneries, particularly Leather Working Group (LWG)-certified houses in Italy, chosen for their responsible and sustainable production. Vegetable-tanned leathers such as Badalassi Carlo’s Minerva Box are tanned slowly with natural plant tannins, carry a rich natural grain, and develop a deep patina with every year of use.
The process
How each piece is made
01
Pattern & cut
Each piece starts from our own pattern and is cut by hand from a selected hide.
02
Saddle-stitched by hand
Seams are saddle-stitched by hand with two needles and a single thread, one stitch at a time, for strength that lasts.
03
Edge finishing
Edges are bevelled, sanded and finished by hand, either burnished or hand-painted to match or contrast.
04
Final inspection
Every piece is checked by the artisan who made it before it leaves the atelier.
Care guide
Caring for your leather
Vegetable-tanned leather is made to be used. A little care goes a long way.
Everyday wear
Light scuffs and marks are normal and will soften and blend in over time as the leather develops its patina. Regular handling actually helps — the natural oils from your hands nourish the leather.
Cleaning
Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust. For marks, use a slightly damp cloth and let the piece air-dry naturally. Avoid solvents, alcohol-based cleaners and household products.
Conditioning
Every 6–12 months, or whenever the leather looks dry, apply a small amount of quality leather conditioner with a soft cloth. Test on a hidden area first and use sparingly.
If it gets wet
Blot gently with a dry cloth and let it dry at room temperature, away from direct heat and sunlight. Never use a hairdryer. Water may darken the leather temporarily.
Storage
Store in a breathable cotton bag, away from direct sunlight and humidity. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture.
About patina
Vegetable-tanned leather darkens and deepens in colour with light, touch and time. This patina is unique to every piece — it's part of its character, not a flaw.
